30-year-old Holstein herd dispersed

Holstein breeders turned out in force for the dispersal of Ian Henderson’s Taura Holstein herd, which reached a top price of 1750gns at Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

The herd, established 30 years ago at Stocksfield, Northumberland, was founded on some of the best known cow families in the Holstein breed.

Among the good female lines was Meadolake Bubbles, bought from the dispersal of the renowned Ullswater herd over 20 years ago.

The day’s top price came for a freshly calved heifer by KC Roses Chatter T Red.

Out of an Ex93 dam by Taura Lux with a best of almost 10,000kg, she joins the Lemington herd of J Hodge, Eyemouth, Berwickshire.

Taura Stormey Lady Red PI was snapped up by joint buyers Ian Mallinson and Peter Sherwen.

Bred from the Hanoverhill Lulu family, this fourth calver had topped 9000kg in her last lactation and was in-calf to Tallent Chianti.

She joins Mr Mallinson’s Carrhall herd at Low Northsceugh, near Carlisle and Mr Sherwen’s Excellent herd on the Cumbria coast at Seascale.

Tracing back to the same family through Hanoverhill Raid Lady was Taura Malachite Lulu.

This second calver by Robthom Malachite was bought by Stuart Braid, Moffat, Dumfriesshire.

A 1600gns call from Messrs Brough of Dalston, Carlisle, secured the Picston Shaker-sired fourth calver Taura Shaker Noreen.

Averages: 70 cows ÂŁ915, 17 in-calf heifers ÂŁ769 and 32 maiden heifers ÂŁ630. (Harrison and Hetherington)
