Gornal bull ‘Tip Top’ of Border and Lakeland sale

The Annandale Holstein herd took both championship titles at the Border and Lakeland Holstein Club’s spring bull sale.


But it was a Gornal bull boasting six generations of Excellent females that wowed the ringside at Borderway Mart and produced the top call of 3600gns.


Consigned by Philip Davies of Powys, Gornal Tip Top was bred from the renowned Gornal Spot Ada family, well known for index, type and production. Buyer was T Mactaggart of Castle Douglas.


And there was more deep breeding behind the 3550gns bull Carrock Dynamo from Messrs Brough’s herd at Dalston, Carlisle.


By Regancrest Elton Durham and bred from the successful Margot family, he was bought jointly by James Currie & Son of the Carlinside herd at Lanark and Jim Reid of the Bengalhill herd at Lockerbie.


Willie Armour’s Annandale bulls hit the spot with judge Jimmy Hull of the Fortland herd at Garstang, Lancs.


The overall title went to the Annandale Leosteen-son Annandale Jordan. Bred from the high component Brynhyfryd Janie family, he made 3100gns to local buyer I Ellithorn.


Herdmate Annandale Seattle Flew realised 3100gns after taking the reserve championship.


Among the high priced bulls was a Fintalex Norman son from A H Mann & Son, Ross-shire, taken at 3000gns by J Drummond, Kilmarnock, while Wolfa Imprint – a Stormatic son from Messrs Armstrong – stayed in Cumbria at 2300gns with R Brough, Aspatria. Overall, 28 young sires levelled at 1925.

Females


The day’s female sale saw 39 in-milk heifers average 1024 and 11 cows average 947.


The top bid was 1850gns for a calved heifer by Alfrag Juror Kendall from Skirwith Hall Farms, Penrith.


Their championship winner Stowbeck Kendall Hilary is out of a twice 12,000kg-plus dam by Maloya London.


Buyers were D R & H M Horsley, Penrith.


Messrs Sanderson of Carlisle paid 1450gns for Overside Morty Elusive from W W Neilson, Strathaven.


She is by Morty and has a twice 11,000kg-plus dam is by Jolt.


A second dam by Raider achieved eight lactations including two over 13,000kg.
