Welsh Blacks to 4700gns twice at Dolgellau event

The two-year-old Penwernhir Rhos 2nd from breeder Doug Rowbotham was one of two bulls at 4700gns at the Welsh Black Cattle Society’s Dolgellau fixture last week.

Two bulls from the Penwernhir and Neuadd herds realised 4700gns at the Welsh Black Cattle Society’s sale at Dolgellau with averages up ÂŁ741 on the year.

The two-year-old Penwernhir Rhos 2nd weighed 830kg on the day.

Paraded by breeder Doug Rowbotham from his herd at Ystrad Meurig, Ceredigion, Rhos 2nd is by Chwaen Erddyn 137th.

He is half brother to last year’s breed society Bull of the Year Penwernhir Sambo who sold for 4800gns last November.

Rhos 2nd joins the herd of Enzo Sauro at Pontyberem, Llanelli.

And it was one of the youngest bulls in the sale that shared top billing.

The 17-month-old Neuadd Hebog 179th had a daily liveweight gain of 1.38kg and was shown by his breeder D Williams.

Buyer at 4700gns was D H Roberts, Oswestry.

Collecting the day’s reserve championship and weighing 930kg was the 25-month-old bull Gwern-Cynyddion Rhys 37th.

By Seisiog Rhys 39th and consigned by Robert John Evans, Llanbedr, he goes to Tywyn buyers L & M Williams.

And the same buyers took another bull paying 2000gns for the organically reared two-year-old Gerddi Brenin from Elwyn Pryce Evans.

The AI-bred Gwern-Cynyddion Cai 5th is by Machreth Cai 7th and realised 3600gns for breeder Robert John Evans.

He weighed 700kg on the day – a daily gain of 1.18kg – and heads for Denbighshire with R Richards.

Making the biggest impression on judge Derfel Harries was the 17-month-old Gravel Henry from Ken Hughson & Partners, Llandrindod Wells.

He had a daily gain of 1.35kg and is by Gravel Andrew 2nd. Buyers were Mr and Mrs J Griffiths, Pwllheli, at 3200gns.

It was the champion maiden heifer that led the female section.

Cwmcae Ester 104th is by Sylen Ifor and was shown by Trefor Jones, Aberystwyth and sold for 1220gns.

Champion female ticket went to Neuadd Ethel 216th, a Brysgaga Erddyn 31st daughter from William Jenkins.

Buyer was the breed society’s president-elect Robert Williams of Talybont.

Averages: eight bulls ÂŁ3178 and 20 females ÂŁ645. (Farmers Marts (R G Jones))
