The first Border and Lakeland sale of 2009 at Carlisle set the scene for the year ahead with a raft of strong prices leading to an average of more than ÂŁ2126.25.

Heading up the trade were two sales at 2700gns, the first of which was a bid from Jim Caldwell, Baltersan Mains, Maybole, for the day’s pre-sale show reserve champion a Regancrest Samuelo daughter from Robbie Scott, Mossblown, Ayr.

Following closely behind were a brace of 2500gns bids, with the day’s champion, a Riverdane Elegant daughter from Messrs Hodgson, Wormanby Farm, Carlisle, selling to N and S J Sanderson, Brampton. This one was fresh calved and carried a tremendous rear udder and powerful frame.
