Border and Lakeland Holsteins in demand

A small milk price rise promised for some, together with an excellent cast cow trade and a hint of spring weather in the air, plus the high quality on offer combined to produce a much better trade at last week’s Border and Lakeland Holstein Club sale at Carlisle

A third of the consignment made 2000gns or more to a top of 2400gns for a daughter of the udder specialist bull Ladino Park Talent. This heifer bred by the Alan Cannon in his Espland herd read well on paper too, being backed by at least three generations of long living cows with high fat and protein records, she now joins John Harrisons Wickerfield herd at Kings Meaburn, Penrith.

The champion female was one of a lovely consignment from one of Scotland’s leading herds, Messrs Brewster’s Boclair herd, Boclair Farm, Bearsden. Sired by the rated Durham son Mr Minister from a good line of the Gypsy family tracing back to Bill McPherson’s old Huchenbarn family.

This six week calved heifer made 2150gns to progressive south Scotland dairy farmers Messrs Wallace.

Close behind at 2100gns was Petteril Spirte Annette. This heifer from the Morley’s noted herd boasted a great pedigree from the Canadian Donfield family and is by Cedarwal Spirte off a very good 50t Roylane Jordan homebred cow.

Averages; three cows in milk £1568, 22 heifers in milk £1869.95 (Harrison and Hetherington).
