Brisk sheep bidding at Bakewell

An increased entry of 3196 sheep on offer at Bakewell Marketthis week included 2500 finished hoggs. Several runs of hoggs coming straightoff keep saw demand very brisk from the 34-42kg Continental types with theseregularly selling at 200p/kg for better sorts and a top pen of 219p/kg.

Bakewell sale.JPGThe top12 pens returning an average of 210p/kg and an overall market average of190.09p/kg which included a large proportion of mules and swales.


Leading trade at 215p/kg was AT Froggatt, Abbots Bromley,closely followed by 206p/kg was MV Turner, Sheldon.


A total of 11 new season lambs on offer this week allforward from Edwin Pocock, Totley   sawincreased demand and ranged from 238p/kg to 254p/kg.


A total of 573 cull ewes and rams saw all types of ewes indemand with very brisk bidding throughout. Best of the heavy Continentalspeaked at £138 shown by Broughs of Monyash, with Charolais rams from IanHunter, Radbourne, topping at £118. Ewes went to £138 and averaged £77.58,while rams averaged £77.89.


A total 112 Gritstone store sheep on offer from one vendorsaw in lamb correct ewes go to £84 and broken mouth ewes top at £81.
