Calf prices at Shrewsbury return to pre-BSE heights

Simmental bulls hit the £400 barrier at Shrewsbury this week, some of the highest prices seen for a decade.

The bull calves were from Messrs Turnock of Condover, near Shrewsbury as entries in the calf section reached 100. Auctioneer Tom Jones, from Halls, appealed for more entries to meet the strong demand from buyers.

“The last time we hit the £400 barrier in the calf section at Shrewsbury was pre-BSE,” said Mr Jones. “It’s good to see more farmers returning to market with their calves rather than selling them directly off the farm.

“TB restrictions, which are severely affecting farms, have also suppressed the market because some farmers have had to keep the calves much longer than they had planned.

“Now that farms are being given the all clear, we are starting to see entries and prices rise.”
