Forward from Hugo Arnold, Chester, Tonga is by Lynfield Pointer and out of homebred dam Hockenhull Deborah 4. With a terminal sire index of 18, Tonga goes on to join pre-sale judge Sandy McDowall’s herd at Culquhasen Newton Stewart.
Following Tonga through the classes to reserve championship was the Loud family’s January 2006-born entry Taurus Topic. Topic claimed the second highest price of the day, being knocked down at 2800gns to the MacAuley Land Use Research Institute, Lanarkshire.
Taurus, with an impressive terminal sire index of 24, is by Scotland Hooray Henry and out of Brinkton Brilliant sired Taurus Jade.
Simmental society vice president John Trafford, Cockermouth saw his entry Rooklea Starwars make 2400gns, selling to Sybil McBryde, Lockerbie. Starwars is by Hepplewhite Kong and carries a terminal sire index of 17.
With five other lots topping 2000gns the sale resulted in an average of £1935, some £75 up on the year. Next top at 2300gns was Blackwell Schubert from I and M Steel, Hull. Schubert – terminal sire index a mighty 24 – sold to E D Jones and Son, Brecon and is by the famous bull Blackford Harvester.
Following him was the first of five bulls to make 2000gns, Caistor Neptune from Brian Lundy, Market Raisen, Lincs. Five year old Neptune is by Caistor Karl and sold to Innes Farms, Morayshire.
Next in line was R and M McAlisters Bruchag Supersonic with a terminal sire index of 20. He sold to M Hanny, Gatehouse of Fleet who also bought another at 2000gns, L J and A J Currys’ Winford Sanderson with a pedigree which goes back to Wroxall Field Marshall.
The fourth 2000gns bid came for Rosten Sol from W Heaps, Chorley, Lancs. This October 2005-born son of Brinkton Brilliant joined R Watson and Sons’ Kirkudbrightshire. Final 2000gns call was made by M Hose, Drumore, Stranraer when he bought Hugo Arnolds second bull, Hockenhull Taiwan, also by Lynfield Pointer and carrying a terminal sire index of 19.
Among the females trade topped at 2600gns for Astcote Robyn from S and C Evans, Towcester, Northants. Robyn was sold with her August born heifer calf at foot.
