Chelford British Blues sell to 7600gns

Trade was decidedly selective at last Saturday’s sale of British Blues at Chelford, with bull buyers in particular wary of bidding too strongly for the selection on offer.

Making the top price of the day at 7600gns was Penygelly Elite from Messrs Brian Griffiths, Newtown. This March 2009-born bull is by Annanwater Vince and out of Hazelwood Winona, a Hazelwood Sylvester daughter. He sold with a carcass yield index of +14 and was snapped up by Messrs Richardson, Ghyll House, for their commercial herd.

Second best of the day was a brace of 6100gns calls, with the first coming for the day’s male and overall champion Boothlow Elvis from K and J Bellfield. This one is an April 2009-born Boothlow Batman son out of Four Oaks Olivia, a  Gribouille De La Bonne Raie daughter. With a carcass yield index of +10 I believe he sold to Jason and Sarah Wareham, Sussex.

The other at this price was LukeRoyal Enoch from Mel Lucas. He is an August 2009-born Empire D-Ochain son out of Lukeroyal Winnifred, a Campagnard Et De St Fontaine daughter. This one has a carcass yield index of +14 and was bought by P Tindale, Shadforth, Durham.

And Mel Lucas took the next best call of 5800gns with Lukeroyal Earl, a June 2009-born Lukeroyal Battleaxe son out of Lukeroyal Belle, a Hazelwood Freshman daughter. He has a carcass yield index of +13 and was knocked down to suckled calf breeders Messrs Williams, Llanidloes, Powys.

Selling for 5000gns was New Close Emperor from I and E Wilson, Uttoxeter, which was bought by Messrs Woolhouse, Rotherham. Sired by Bringlee Blackstar, this one is out of Hazelwood Tinkerbell, a Hazelwood Jake daughter. He traded with a carcass yield index of +19.

Best in the females on offer was a 4800gns bid for the female champion Denby Daisy from Huw Roberts. She is an Eternal De Dieu Seul daughter out of Ridge Dean Unmistakable, a Ridge Dean Mahogany daughter. She sold with a carcass index of +13. She was taken home by R Williams, Fishguard.

Second top of the females on offer was a heifer from J T Wainwright and Sons, Fife, Todhall Eve. This November 2009-born entry is by Blak Du Baty D’Eprave and out of imported dam Addition 2158 Pachie Mott. She went to Nigel Jenkinson, Shebbear, Devon.

In the commercial show cattle on offer the best bid was a £2850 sale for the heifer and reserve overall champion from the pre-sale show, a Bluegrass Cyclone-sired heifer from Andrew Price, Maidstone, Kent. She sold to Christine Williams and Paul Tippetts, Shifnal.

Following that at £2200 was a heifer from Phil and Sharon Sellers which had been reserve champion young farmers beast at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in December. She sold to Dean Anderson, Maine, Scotland.

Then at £2000 was the steer and overall champion, a May 2010-born Norton Canon son from Nigel Pritchard, Herefordshire. This one was bought by Richard and Judy Fountaine, Buckinghamshire.

Averages; bulls £3377, heifers £3362.50, females with calves at foot £2310, crossbred steers £952.78, crossbred heifers £1016.33 (Frank Marshall and Co).
