Commercial men dominate Welshpool Charolais trade

Commercial buyerswere to the fore at Welshpool last week when Charolais breeders established twonew centre records, with trade peaking at a new centre record of 9000gns and anew centre record average of £3706.

Sale leader was theday’s champion, Moelfre Explosion from Kevin Thomas, Newcastle Emlyn. Sired bythe privately purchased Gretnahouse Vigorous, he was out of a MowbrayparkParamount sired homebred dam and went to join Cumbria’s largest suckler herdwith 280 cows at Greystoke Castle Farms, Greystoke, Penrith, with a TSI of +34and an of SRI +35.DSC_6120 Champion Lot 16.jpg

The day’s second topcall of 6200gns was made for Hendy Fearless, a 15 month old youngster byBalthayock Matthew and out of a homebred dam by Tullygarley Rollerball from Wynand Diane Rees, Llangurig, Llanidloes. Fearless who earlier on headed his classwent home with O R Jones, Tywyn.  

Father and son team,Brian and Matthew Jones, Brecon, sold their best of the day Bailea Exterminatorat 5600gns with a TSI of +35 and an SRI +36. He was bought by D S Pryce andSons, Deytheur, Llansantffraid. This one is fully homebred being by BaileaUlysse and out of a homebred cow going back to Gower Halogen.

The reserve champion,Maerdy Engelbert selling with a TSI of +26 and an SRI of +30, attracted thenext highest call of 5400gns from G P Pugh and Son, Rhayader. Bred by EsmorEvans, Mold, this 19 month old was by Maerdy Super and out of a homebred cow byRosanna Magic.DSC_6116 Lot 34 Res Champ.jpg

Roger Everall,Shrawardine, Shrewsbury  then sold first prizewinner  Shraden Extraordinaire at5200gns. This one is by Mowbraypark Paramount and went with a TSI of +32 and anSRI of +31 to E M Gittins, Menai Bridge, Anglesey. Next at 5000gns was GarethJones’ Esgob Evan, a Thrunton Virginian son with a TSI of +28 and an SRI of+35. He is out of a Maerdy Nelson sired dam and sold to G W Thomas, Ferwig,Cardigan.

Kevin Thomas’s nextbest at 4800gns was Moelfre Explorer with a TSI of +22 and an SRI of +24. Siredby Allanfauld Norseman and out of a homebred cow going back to Vigorous, he wasknocked down to W S Jones, Bryn Crug, Tywyn.

A pair from EsmorEvans shared the a 4300gns call, with the first at this money being MaerdyEurocrat, a Vald’Or-Ra son and out of a homebred cow going back to MaerdyGrimaldi. Eurocrat sold to E W Gubb, Brayford, Barnstaple. Second at this pricewas Maerdy Filter when selling to C G Young, Pensellwood, Wincanton. He is a MaerdyAlcazar son, he was out of a Maerdy Padirac sired dam.
