A COUNCIL HAS withdrawn a threat to close a pig farm which was causing a “smell nuisance”.
Farmers Roger and John Hobill had been served a legal notice by Melton Borough Council, Leics, ordering them to take steps to reduce odour.
If that didn‘t happen, the council said they would take High Court action to stop production at Welby Grange Farm, near Melton Mowbray.
The move had infuriated the farmers, who had already taken action to reduce the smell following previous complaints, by reducing the number of pigs by 35% to 2000.
The council has now withdrawn the notice and – in return – the farm has agreed not to appeal against the notice being issued in the first place.
The two parties say they will now work closely together to try to solve the problem.
