Kirkby Stephen Mart’s annual New Fair sale of 526 head of cattle sold exceptionally well yesterday with an excellent show of 10 outfits being put in front of the judge, Mr Nicholson, Swinside End Farm. He awarded his first prize to a British Blue cross heifer and calf from Messrs HW and J Birkbeck, Castle Hill , which later went on to realise £2200 to Levens Farms.
The show of Breeding Cattle was kindly sponsored by Taylor & Braithwaite, Dyke Nook and Old Hall Veterinary Centre, Appleby and the following awards where made:-
Topping the sale was Messrs Stevenson, Howgill Foot at £2500 for a top quality Limousin cow and calf.
The sale also included a major reduction from Messrs Stevenson, Howgill Foot, who sold 50 outfits. Heifers and calves averaged £1,606.25 (+ £106.85 on the year), cows and calves averaged £1,584.74 (+ £334.89 on the year). Breeding bulls topped at £2350 for a homebred bull consigned by Messrs Marston, Easegill Head.
