Dairy in demand at Exeter sale with £2,200 top call

An entry of 175 dairy cattle at Exeter’s first monthly dairy show and sale saw a packed ringside with trade realising a top call of £2,200 for the first prize heifer and overall champion Heathfield Master Judy 41 a Cogent Master daughter from Mark and Lyn Bray of Barnstaple.

The same vendors sold other heifers to £1,850 with their consignment averaging £1,950. Three heifers sold to £2,000 for Messrs S E J Tapp and Sons of Tiverton, Messrs C R and J A Bishop of Honiton and Messrs A F and S G Loud and Sons of Lewdown who both sold other heifers to £1,900.

Mr G C B Davis of Tiverton sold a run of heifers to £1,950 for the reserve champion heifer and also sold a non-pedigree cow for £2,000 . Pete Snell of Honiton sold heifers to £1,880. Other cows sold to £1,950 for a Red and White second calver from Mr A Wiggins of Tiverton. Messrs S E J Tapp and Son sold a second calver by Calbrett Champion giving 41kgs to £1,880.

The final consignment to disperse the British Frisian herd on behalf of Messrs W Waller of Cullompton saw a fast trade with a second calver selling to £1,800 and two heifers by Langley Brigade and Langley Balmoral sell to £1,720. British Frisian heifer calves from the same vendors sold to £320.

A large entry of Organic cows and heifers saw a strong trade with a second calver selling to £1,820 from Mr D F Gent of Broadclyst. Dry cows from Mr B H Worth of Ilfracombe sold to £1,720 for a pedigree Ayrshire due in May.

In-calf heifers saw a remarkable trade topping at £1,750 for a pedigree British Friesian due May onwards from Messrs Veale Bros of Totnes who sold others to £1,720 and their consignment of 14 heifers averaged £1,568. Organic in-calf heifers due in May sold to £1,620 and £1,600 for Mr B Worth of Ilfracombe and the same vendor sold served heifers due September onwards to £1,120.

The sale included the second “English Gold Top” sale of pedigree Jerseys which saw considerable interest with a top price of £2,500 for a stunning heifer from Bruce and Jenny Ravenhill-White of Umberleigh with “Whitenhill Excitations Elderberry VG86” by Bridon Excitation and bred from 3 gens of VG & EX cows, she sold due in August to a new Westcountry breeder.

The same vendor sold a quality run of in milk cows and heifers with others selling to £1,350 and £1,300. Their dry cows sold to £1,350 for a second calver by Bridon Sambo Charismatic due in May. In calf heifers again from the same vendor sold to £1,220 three times and averaged £1,178. The Whitenhill consignment averaged £1,268. David and Lena Lewis of Wiveliscombe sold freshly calved heifers to £1,280 for a Big Show daughter from the Tweeny family from Maunlake. The same vendor sold an in calf heifer by Big Boy from the same family line for £1,200. Messrs MOK Day and Partners of Taunton sold a fresh second calver by Big Show for £1,120. Heifer calves sold to £220 for a Potterswalls Minister daughter from Bruce & Jenny Ravenhill-White of Umberleigh.
