Dairy trade back on the week at Gisburn

 

An air of caution amongst buyers ringside resulted in slower trade at Gisburn’s dairy sale this week (9 Jan) and a top price of just £2,020 – down £360 on the week.

 

Sale leader came from Harold Ward, Chorley. Buyer was AA and E Critchley and Son, Hutton, Preston.

 

Peter Smith, Burnley earned the day’s top price for a pedigree heifer at £1,950. Purchaser was Richard Shuttleworth, West Marton, Skipton.

 

 

An in-calf Swedish Red from James Rogerson, Poulton le Fylde, Preston, sold for £1,520 to K and M Berry and Son, Thornton in Craven, Skipton.

 

The rearing calf section saw another large show for the time of year with 200 calves forward. Of these 31 black and whites forward sold between a minimum of £5 and high of £215 to level at a sold average of £99.  British Blues continued to dominate the highest prices. The 32 bulls forward sold to £495 for a quartet of two-month-old calves from Alan Bowker, Cowling, closely followed by Tom Green, Wigan, at £488 and Colin Whitelock, Gargrave, Skipton, at £480.

 

Fifteen bulls sold in excess of £400 and averaged £375 right through.

 

British Blue heifers topped at £395 from P Johnson, Stacksteads, Rossendale, and averaged £267 for all quality.  Limousins were in shorter supply , but were keenly sought after. The star of the show was a smart red three-quarter bred heifer from E Simpson and Sons, Dinckley, Blackburn at £435.

 

Topping the Angus section was Roger Dakin, Hellifield, Skipton, with a batch of three-month-old calves, which attracted plenty of interest. In the end bulls realised £428 and heifers £335. Hereford bulls sold to £368 from JR and MI Berry, Clitheroe, (average £262) and heifers to £210 from AA and E Critchley and Son, Hutton, Preston (average £199).
