Dairy Event 2010: Molasses price takes a dip and farmers urged to take advantage

Cereal and rapeseed meal prices may be on the rise, but the price of molasses-based liquid feeds are doing the opposite, which is why farmers are being urged to act on the dip now.

High energy molasses-based liquid feeds containing 44% crude protein have fallen by about £10/t, while rapeseed prices have risen by about £30/t and wheat £35/t, said ED and F Man’s Phil Holder.

“But it is more than just a widening price differential – liquid feeds can cost effectively supply both energy and protein into the diet. In addition, their inclusion will increase ration palatability and reduce sorting, both stimulating high intakes,” he said.

And following the dry summer, liquid feeds could also be useful on farms where forage stocks are lower than normal, he added. “They provide the opportunity to upgrade the nutritional value and appeal of lower quality grass silages and straw and extend forage supplies.”
