Devon Show 2012: Pig interbreed championship

TS 1852012 Devon Pig Champ.JPGA Large Black has taken the first of the interbreed championships of the day.

Sock Doreen 186th is homebred by Martin Snell of Mudford sock, Yeovil, who showed her in the ring. By Tofts Super 329th, this September 2010 born sow did one better this year, having been placed reserve interbreed at last year’s show. This was her first outing of 2012.

She heads to The Royal Bath and West and Shepton Mallet in a couple of weeks time and in the meantime returns home to re-join the herd of 10 Large Black sows.

In reserve was the Landrace champion, Prestcombe Vega 2 from Mr J Newth, Manor Farm, Prestleigh, Somerset. This August 2009 born sow is by Deerpark Enorm.

Judge Graham Hinks of Dorset said his winner was the best he had seen in nearly 30 years of judging. “She has wonderful limbs, style and movement. The reserve is a great sow, but she doesn’t quite have the bloom of the champion.”
