Entries down at Holsworthy for first sale of 2008

The first sale of the year on Wednesday for Kivells Auctioneers at Holsworthy Market in Devon saw fewer fat cattle forward than usual, which helped lift trade by 3-4p/kg, with a few single suckled Limousin cross steers from D J Ward, Bridgetown topping at 121p/kg, while heifers topped at 119p/kg for a Limousin from P J Harris, Highlands.

The 30 store cattle forward topped at £620 for a 24 month old Belgian Blue from D Daniel, North Tamerton, while heifers topped at £532 for a Charolais entry.

Calf trade saw a smaller than usual entry of 26 and a peak of £195 for a Limousin cross bull calf from David Medland, Whitstone. Hereford calves sold to £132, Charolais to £185, Simmentals to £190 and Belgian Blue crosses to £180.
