Exeter Lleyns meet improved trade

An increased entry of Lleyns at the breed society’s Exeter sale met a generally improved trade last week, with 96% of the shearling and older ewes selling with averages up £6.50 and £11 respectively.

Among the ewe lambs trade was more patchy, with just 60% cleared, although the average for those sold was £9 up on the year. Topping the ewe lamb trade were Messrs W J and D J Williams, Pwllheli, with their entries which sold at £85, while fellow Welsh breeders Messrs Morris, St Clears, sold to £81.

In the shearlings the top price was £108 achieved by Mr T R B Turner, Crediton, with another Welsh breeder, Messrs Lewis, Llanon, taking second top at £105. This price was shared by Ashton Selway, Stalbridge.

Mr Turner also achieved the best price among the older ewes too, with £95 paid for his best entries there.

Among the rams the top price of 2800gns was paid for a shearling from Messrs E and D Jones, Machynlleth which was bought by Charles Phillips for the Barrington Estate, Burford.
