Females in demand at Hereford society sale


Romany 1 Dawn A84 H38 sold for the top feamle price of 3,600gns web.jpgA packed sale ring at Saturday’s Hereford Society sale – no doubt attracted by the Major Reduction Sale of the prize-winning Mara Herd for Bob and Margaret Borwick – saw a total clearance of the females on offer.


The first females through the ring were the small offering of show heifers and the top price of 3,600gns (above) was paid for the two year old in-calf heifer, Romany 1 Dawn A84 H38 bred by J R B Wilson and Sons, Kelso.


Having trekked all the way down from Scotland she was to return north having been purchased by W and P Eccles, Rockness Herefords, of Tranent, East Lothian.


The Major Reduction of the Mara Herd for Bob and Margaret Borwick, Preston Deanery, Northampton, saw their 18 lots offered top at 3,300gns for the two and half year old in-calf heifer, Mara Dowager 19th, purchased by J H Evans and Sons, Bwlchllyn Herefords, Caersws, Powys.


Overall, their offering sold for a total of £36,492.75 to average £2,027.


Their young three and half year old in-calf cow, Mara Bonny 28th sold for 3,000 gns to James and Hazel Morrison, Castle Park Herfords, Helmsley, Yorkshire who also purchased the three year old incalf cow, Mara Bonny 25th, for 1,905 gns.


Among the rest of the Hereford females forward, Messrs Wilson also took the female championship with a 12 month old heifer, Romany 1 Julia D1 J42 which sold for 2,600gns to P and E Williams, Alderoak Herefords, Montford Bridge, Shropshire.


A further three two year old Romany heifers made good money. Romany 1 Julia D345 H17, sold for 2,500gns to G D and M R Watkins, Hollybush Herefords, Ocle Pychard, Hereford.


Romany 1 Lucy D345 H31 also made 2,500gns joining the top prize heifer purchased by W and P Eccles. Romany 1 Julia E23 H53 went for 2,300gns to newcomers to the Breed, R C Gledhill and L W Davies, Carmarthen.


Other leading prices for females included the 18 month old Dendor 1 Anna Mary 14th bred by D E, E D and A L Jones, Caersws, Powys, selling for 2,900gns to M Ludgate, Rempstone Herefords, Thame, Oxon.,


Another heifer from Messrs Blandford, the two and half year old, Bosa 1 Rosea 724, sold for 2,600gns to P T English, Churchlands Estate Herefords, Banbury, Oxon.


The same age in-calf heifer, Danleebar 1 Careful 4th, bred by B Bovingdon, Windsor, Berkshire, also went for the same money to another newcomer Acton Supplies, Risley, Derbyshire.





There was a slower trade for the bulls on offer, with the grand and senior champion, 23 month old Cathedral 1 Manitoba, bred by Nick Wren, Scarterfield, Fishbourne, West Sussex, selling for 3,200gns to P A M Riley, Blakesley Herefords, Towcester, Northampton.


Top price of the day was paid for the 20 month old Solpoll 1 Hero (below), bred by J and W McMordie, County Down, Northern Ireland purchased by J Walker, Docklow Herefords, Clifton-on-Teme, Worcester for 3,800 gns.

Mr Walker purchased a further two bulls, the 17 month old Shraden 1 Horlicks, bred by M J and H M Timmis, Baschurch, Shrewsbury, for 3,000gns and 18 month old Auckvale Hotstuff 1076H, bred by W R Kemp and Sons, Bishop Auckland, County Durham for 2,000gns.


Second highest price of the day was paid for 19 month old Solpoll 1 Haymaker, bred by J and W McMordie and selling for 3,500gns to Mrs M Jefferies, Beckwith Herefords, Harrogate, Yorkshire.
