Farmers Weekly Beef Farmer of the Year finalist, Willie Ritch, East Fingask, Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, has won one of the top awards in the Royal Smithfield Club’s annual National Festival of Meat competition.
He has been named producer of the best rib of beef from an animal sired by British native breed bull. The winning rib of beef was entered for the competition by Scotbeef of Bridge of Allan, Stirling, and came from a 364.4kg Aberdeen-Angus carcase from Mr Ritch’s suckler herd of 130 Aberdeen-Angus x Limousin cows.
“I didn’t even know a rib from one of our carcases had been entered,” said Mr Ritch. “The news is absolutely fantastic.”
This is the first time a carcase from Mr Ritch has been entered in the competition although cattle from the herd are regular winners of Christmas carcase shows.
