Getting ready for the Smiddiehill sale

They’ve often caused a stir in the show ring as well as round the sale ring when they’ve been buying, but now all eyes are on Smiddiehill as they sell their noted Holstein and Jersey herd next month at Bristol.

In just six years, the extravagant rise to prominence of these two remarkable herds is a story that will be part of cattle breeding history for some years to come. And with 47 prize winning animals catalogued, there’s no doubt the sale will rise to the occasion.

Under the management of David and Bev Bostock, the herd has 16 Excellent and 25 Very Good cows and an average of 11,628kg, 4.21% fat and 3.20% protein and in the smaller Jersey herd 5 Excellent and 4 Very Good cows and an average 7657kg and 5.42% fat.

Smiddiehill have won 30 breed championships and have dominated the most recent National Holstein show winning all four banners. The herd is ranked third on PLI in the UK and averages 89 points for the Holsteins and 90 points for the Jerseys. The list of genetics on offer is in itself mouth watering. Some 18 members of the record breaking Erle family are on offer. Continual investment in embryos from the world’s best genetics means the sale will feature five heifers of truly international potential – Ashlyn, Melanie, Paradise, Pledge and Promis.

Several lots are carrying valuable embryos and a number of frozen embryos are also on offer, namely from Formation Erle or Nipponia EDR BG Godiva.

Of the Jerseys, the name on most people’s lips will be Rapidbay-UK Jonquil S Belladonna (lot 65). Bred from five generations of EX cows she is closely related to Rapid Bay Just Wait and Rock Ella Remake.

I’m already excited about this sale as it’s likely to be one to be remembered for some time – I look forward to seeing you there on the 5th March!
