Great day for Rosett Holsteins

A great crowd of breeders and commercial milk producers descended on Rackery Farm, Burton, Nr. Rossett, Wrexham for the sale of the entire milking portion of Andrew and Jenny Jones’ noted Rossett Herd, auctioned by Wright Manley.

Renowned followers of the Canadian breeding philosophy, they decided to sell their cows and start again with the in-calf heifers. This generally young herd calved all year round and averaged over 9400 kg, 4.18% butterfat and 3.28% protein combined with some 80 EX or VG animals catalogued.

Buyers gathered from all over the country and cattle were distributed from southern Scotland to South Wales and Northern Ireland. Top price was 3800gns for Rossett Stormatic Maria (VG88 3yr), a young cow, bred from four generations of EX homebred dams, who calved her second last September and is due again in August to Gillette Final Cut. She was purchased by Cameron Baty on behalf of a client. Not far behind at 3500gns was the heifer Rossett Igniter DP Jingles (VG87-2yr) who also calved last September and in-calf to Talent for October. She was purchased by G T Booth of Lothersdale, Keighley, West Yorkshire for his Dowshawdale Herd.

Next in line at 2800gns was Painley Journalist Kimo 97th (GP84), a milking heifer with eight generations of VG/EX dams behind her and due with her second in September to Igniter. She was purchased by local breeders G E Jones & Co for their Clwedog Herd.

Just 100 gns behind at 2700gns was Rossett Igniter CL Minnie (VG88), a beautiful second calver who gave 8050 kg, 4.93% 3.48% as a heifer and who calved her second at the end of December. She sold to Watson Bros for their Derrydorragh herd at Coleraine, Co. Londonderry.

Two animals realised 2500gns each; the first was High Society SM Sweet 2nd (VG86-2yr), a Morty daughter who is 11th generation classified in the top two grades. She sold, bred to Talent, to Graham Pierce for his Milwr Herd at Dodleston, Chester. At the same price was Rossett Lee Ms Perla (EX90), a third lactation cow with 9 generations VG/EX who is due in November to the Booth’s Dowshawdale Herd.

In-Calf heifers sold to 2000 gns for Rossett Outside Reba due to Picston Shottle in the first week of June, she now joins Richard Pilkington’s Aintree Herd.

Volume buyers were Messrs. Coopon Lavenham who purchased 21 head for their herd at Bury St.Edmunds, Suffolk.
