Hampshire Down females hit 390gns at Skipton

Hampshire Down females met a firm trade selling to a top of 390gns in Skipton on Saturday 30 August at the breed Association’s northern region show and sale.

Sale leader at 390gns was the day’s champion, a ewe lamb from Jim Cresswell, Diss to P Thompson, Wolsingham. Sired by Wattisfield Whatwhat and out of a Westland bred ewe, she was no stranger to the ring having helped make up the winning pair of ewe lambs at the Royal.

Next at 340gns was a shearling ewe by Owslebury Rapier and out of a Yarcombe bred dam from Jennifer Atkinson and David Smith’s Kelsey flock, Market Rasen to J Galbraith and Son, Endmoor, Kendal. Lisa Chasney, Green Hammerton, York went to 245gns for another same way bred entry from the same breeders, while for 250gns she secured one of Messrs Atkinson and Smith’s ewe lambs by Yarcombe Erroll.

Messrs Atkinson and Smith also offered their top ewe lamb by the homebred Kelsey Duke at 300gns to AJ Rooke, Harome, York.

A second 300gns call was by P Spence, Norden, for a ram lamb by Ballyvester Mr Power bred by Phil Kettle, Grantham. The same breeder offered a ewe lamb by Mr Power at 250gns to J Birkwood, Thorbeck.

Averages:  7 shearling ewes £228.75; 10 ewe lambs £257.77 (CCM Auctions).
