Limousin heifer calf sets new record at Bakewell

A busy market at Bakewell saw 819 cattle forward on Monday. Cattle numbers were dominated by 478 stores. Leading the trade at £1,860 was a Limousin x Holstein Friesian cow with her 34 month old bull calf at foot from TF and J Thompson, Longnor.

The 124 calves met 100% clearance with a Limousin heifer calf from Clark Farms, Ringinglow, making a record price of £630.

Bull Calves peaked at £460 for Joshua Lomas’ British Blue cross from Whaley Bridge. Native breeds also met a strong trade, especially for those with named sires, with Angus bull calves to £220 and heifer calves to £290. Friesian and Holstein calves made up a large part of the entry selling to £195 and £182 with an overall Friesian average of £73.

Three heifers broke through the 240p/kg mark, with Phil Watson’s British Blue in the top spot at 244p/kg (£1,259), from Brackenfield. Next with a heavy weight at 242p/kg was Keith Belfield’s British Blue cross (£1,524), from Sheen. Third was Chris Tywford, Alport, with his Limousin at 240p/kg. Native heifers sold to 195p/kg with two black and white non breeders at 161p/kg.

Trade saw steers to 207p/kg (£1,457), for John Cowgill’s Limousin x Friesians from Barnsley. Next at 199p/kg (£1,273) were RW Ardern and Sons Limousins, from Topley Pike. Natives sold to 198p/kg for a Shorthorn with black and whites to 186p/kg.

Young bull trade was up 10p on the week, with 15 Limousins from R and A White and Son, Bamford, selling to 195p/kg (£1,509).  Next at 190p/kg (£1,128) came from the Limousins of RM Hadfield, Castleton. Six native Welsh Black young bulls from J Tavernor and Co, Great Haywood, reached 179p/kg (£1,088).

The finished cattle trade continues to mend with a total of 93 cattle reaching 244p/kg and £1,524 a head.

Over thirty month cattle maintained a solid trade with the top cow, a six year old Limousin for Richard Haynes, Whatstandwell, selling at 173p/kg or £1,259.
