Lumbylaw Texels sell to 2300gns top

The dispersal of the final portion of Richard Oates Lumbylaw flock of Texels at Carlisle yesterday saw trade peak at 2300gns for a shearling ewe by Lumbylaw Madras. With the flock famed for its performance recording success, it was no suprise this ewe carried an index of 367 with a muscle depth figure of 4.24.

Due in March to Cambwell Ombudsman, the sale topper sold to M P Luscombe, South Brent, Devon. Next best at 1850gns was another shearling, this time by Lumbylaw Malvern and carrying an index of 379. With a CT gigot score of 6.88 this one sold to the day’s biggest bulk purchaser, Hans Porksen of Morpeth, Northumberland. Having established his Wallington flock last year with purchases from the first Lumbylaw sale, Hans took a total of 18 lots on the day.

Next best was a 1400gns bid for one of the early lots in the sale, a shearling by Lumbylaw Malton and out of a dam by Lumbylaw Lanark. This one carried an overall index of 379 and was in lamb to Cambwell Ombudsman. Again with impressive gigot and muscle scores Mr Porksen added this one to his load too.

Two lots then traded at 1100gns, with the first another shearling with a hefty index, this time 374. By East Middle Le Coq D’or and out of a dam by Lumbylaw Jojo Orlo, this one is due in April with lambs by Cambwell Ombudsman and sold to J G and S M Tallentire, Appleby, Cumbria.

The other at this money was a 2006-born ewe by Lumbylaw Lanark. Carrying an index of 319 and out of a dam by Llanferries Ifor, this one is in-lamb to Cambwell Ombudsman and sold to R B Templeton, Drumclog, Lanarkshire.

Just shy of 1000gns was a 950gns call for another ewe, this time a 2005-born entry sired by Summerwood Grand union and out of a dam by Lumbylaw I Do. With an index of 295, this ewe is due in March with a single by Drinkstone Osram.

Four lots traded at 900gns and the same number sold at 850gns, marking the strength in depth the flock offered and the desire of buyers to take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity to claim some of the best performing genetics in the breed.

Averages; 91 shearling ewes £454.38; six ewes £577.50. (Harrison and Hetherington)
