In the beef classes it was a crossbred 18 month old Limousin x that took the trophy in the cattle ring for Lincolnshire farmers Jonathan, Trevor and Linda Lyons. This 650kg steer bred by Ken Jones, Wales and bought privately earlier this year for an undisclosed sum, also won the Royal Norfolk, and was reserve champion at Herts County Show. This one will be sold later this year.
Judging this category was Chris Gibbons, a family butcher, Hay-on-Wye and Jimmy Wood, Bowland Foods. Both said the winning beast was ‘exceptional with meat everywhere you want it to be and it was a hard job to find a fault’.
In reserve was Matthew Keel, North Yorkshire, with his with his 665kg steer which is by a Belgian Blue bull and out of a Limousin. This one was exhibited at AgriExpo and CountrysideLive earlier in the month.
