Mange still affecting performance

Although PMWS and PRRS present serious issues for pig producers in terms of loss of performance and production, Merial’s Brian Rice warned producers that mange still represents a problem.

“Mange seems to have disappeared from the radar of many producers, but estimates suggest the problem affects about 24% of finishing herds.

The effect of this disease can be significant manifesting largely as depressed growth rates and feed efficiency.

“Pigs with mange will also take up to nine days longer to reach slaughter weight,” adds Mr Price.

“Allocating control is simple and cost effective. It needs to be well planned to see the greatest benefits.

“For producers needing a treatment regime for mange he advised them to talk through the options with their specialist vet.
