Mid month sale peaks at £2,150 at Beeston

Prices peaked at £2,150 at Beeston’s Mid Month dairy sale, with 24 lots selling for more than £2,000 last week (Tuesday 10 Feb).

Sale leader was a homebred Scientific Destry days, who sold eleven days calved and giving 34kg a day. From Graham and Barbara Bell, Tarporley, she headed to south Wales with an undisclosed buyer.

Next best at £2,250 was a heifer from D and AC Shakeshaft, Ellesmere. This one was sired by Wyman and sold to R Williams, Wrinehill, Crewe, giving 30kg.

Three more followed at £2,200, all giving in excess of 32kg daily.

These came from JEG James, Northampton, Jack and Barclay Taylor, Shrewsbury and Enchanted Holsteins, Preston. These daughters of Metalic, Xray and A-L-H Courier all found new homes locally. Two were purchased by D and HE Colclough and Son, Sandbach, and the other headed home with R Williams, Crewe.

Cows with plenty of milk, strength and youthfulness, made good trade. Top call went again to Andrew Shakeshaft, Ellesmere, for a Debonair daughter scored VG as a heifer and giving 39kg fresh with her second.

Overall there were 236 milkers forward on the day with a total clearance in all sections!!

Setting the tone in the in-calf section was T Lea Sherwin, Middlewich, who sold a heifer in calf to Theory and due in March for £1,480. Overall 11 of their commercial heifers averaged £1,311.

Maiden and recently served heifers sold to a high of £1,100 for a Roxy heifer by Nethanvale Mel, severed a month ago to the stock bull and consigned by RW and VL Jones and Sons, Chester.

They also topped the heifer section at £980 for a 14mo daughter of Memphis, bred from 8 gens VG/EX from the Anna family.

All young and fresh calves met a consistent trade throughout, selling between £200 and £320 to average £281 for an entry of 14. Topping the section were two Brown Swiss cross heifers at £320 from I Lancaster, Skipton.

Averages: 50 cows, £1,422.20; 162 milking heifers, £1,682.24; 20 in-calf and served heifers, £1,253.50; 41 maiden heifers, £730.73; 14 heifer calves, £281.43.
