Momentum builds for Great British Beef Week

A giant “patriotic” beef burger, featuring the best local beef and artisan Yorkshire bread, was just one of the home-grown treats on Wednesday April 25 for a group of injured servicemen and women.


They were guests of honour at a barbecue lunch organised at Catterick Garrison by local farmers to celebrate Great British Beef Week.


Now in its second year the week, which kicked off on April 23, is organised by the Ladies in Beef organisation and is backed by DEFRA minister Jim Paice.


Working with people and businesses right across the industry, their mission is to promote the quality and versatility of the British meat and encourage the nation to enjoy it as part of a healthy balanced diet.


The theme of this year’s week is “great British beef for great British heroes” and the Ladies in Beef champions, together with other farmers, retailers, butchers and auction marts, are raising funds for the Help for Heroes (H4H) charity.


“They really do a superb job and deserve all our support and encouragement,” said Yorkshire Ladies in Beef champion Rosey Dunn.


As part of the week, supermarkets are featuring on-pack promotions on Red Tractor assured British Beef, butchers are encouraging customers to get involved and two special H4H cattle sales have taken place at Darlington Auction Mart. Buyers and sellers on both days will be invited to follow the Auction Mart’s lead and make a donation.


People everywhere are also being encouraged to try new and different recipes, by Ladies in Beef champions and celebrity OXO mum Lynda Bellingham.


Ladies in Beef co-founder Minette Batters described her organisation as “a determined group of women who are passionate about creating a sustainable future for British beef”.


She added: “Great British Beef Week was established not only to raise awareness of the industry, but the vital role livestock production plays in the management of our beautiful countryside.”
