NFU Fodder Bank relaunched after ‘wettest summer’

Livestock farmers who are struggling with feed supplies following months of poor weather can take advantage of the NFU’s Fodder Bank scheme.

The record-breaking wet weather this summer left some unable to get onto their land to cut grass, but the free NFU scheme can help bridge the gap.

The free online service, which was launched five years ago, allows farmers who are short of feed, fodder and bedding in touch with those who have excess.

“Farmers across the country are experiencing problems with both the quantity and quality of forage made this year on farm and with the continued high prices for purchased feed,” said NFU livestock board chairman Charles Sercombe.

“I hope that members will take full advantage of the service to appeal for stocks or list any fodder they have to sell.”

Robin Milton, NFU uplands group chairman, added: “With this year seeing the wettest summer in over a century, some of our farmers are having to take drastic steps to reduce stocking levels to deal with a lack of winter fodder. Any help to identify surplus forage will be useful to those farmers with low supplies.”

NFU members should logon to the Fodder Bank service for more information
