Animal rights activists have held a memorial service for fresh and frozen poultry in a supermarket in Berkley, California.
Around 30 mourners from the Direct Action Everywhere group assembled to remember a frozen bird, plucked from the shelves of the supermarket and placed in a cardboard coffin. They relay tributes to the poultry, before proceeding out of the supermarket past the fresh fruit and vegetables.
Understandably there is some tension between staff and the cortege, and towards the end of the seven minute video it becomes unclear as to whether the lead pall bearer will pay for the chicken, walk out, or leave it for another shopper to buy and consume. In the end it is deftly left to one side as a store attendant warns the police are about to arrive.
