The ultimate happy hens

The Feathered Forager was out with the biodynamic boys in the Ashdown Forest last weekend, learning how the alignment of the planets can influence a flock’s laying performance.

Certainly the hens looked like they were enjoying their alternative lifestyle, as they scuttled in and out of the orchard, casting furtive glances at the ever-attendant cockerels.

But what exactly is a happy hen? The advertising gurus at the happy egg co would have you believe they are chooks that ride around on the back of ATVs listening to Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild”.

The biodynamic birds at Brambletye Farm seem a little more laid back, but just as happy…
