Prices peak at £181/head for yearlings at second Usk sheep sale

A superb entry of 3,241 breeding and store sheep met fierce demand at the main Usk sale, Gwernesney, with yearling ewes achieving the day’s top price of £181/head and 100% clearance seen in all sections.

The leading consignment of pedigree Texels from Messrs A and O Hughes, Sigingstone was purachsed by Mr S Pritchard, Llantrisant.

Flock ewes peaked at £132 a head for a consignment of two-year-old Texels from Coach House Farm, Michaelston-le-Pit. Buyer was L Bailey, Llanfair Kilgeddin.

The ewe lamb section saw brisk trade with a pen of Suffolk x Mule ewe lambs from Mr and Mrs P Jones, Llanellen, selling to TJ Waters, Magor for £96 a head.

Store lambs topped at £69 a head for Suffolk x lambs from WM Evans, Pengarn. Purchaser was Miss J Cowen, Pontypool.

Averages: 453 flock ewes, £100.27 (100% clearance); 1,215 yearlings, £113.20 (100% clearance); 1,044 ewe lambs, £78.26 (100% clearance); 424 store lambs, £58.33 (100% clearance).
