Prices reach £8,000 for BFL at Kelso ram sale

There were no high flying prices or record turnover at the 2013 Kelso ram sales , where prices reached £8,000 for a Bluefaced Leicester shearling ram from Messrs J Wight and Sons’ Midlock Flock.
By the end of the day 4,260 rams had changed hands for a total of £2,706,487 and an average of £635.339, down £1.15p on the year with a clearance rate of 84.3%.

However, a steady trade was witnessed for quality sheep in all breeds. Topping the Texel rams with a bid of £7,000 was a shearling ram from Dougie Fleming’s Burnhead flock. His sale leader was FXB 00216, a Langside Ranger son out of a Sheeoch Perfection sired dam which sold to Messrs Proctor (Swarland).

Texel rams also got the next two highest prices. Selling for £6,500 was an entry from the Langside pen of Alex and Russell Gray who enjoyed a strong trade. Pen leader for them was GAL 1200716, he is a son of Brackenridge Strongbow and out of a dam by Claybury Midlander. He sold to John Mellin, Hullhouse.

At just £100 less was another of the noted Kelso shearling producers, Karen Wight’s Midlock flock with a Midlock Odds On son out of a Douganhill Monarch sired dam. He sold to Hugh Jackson, Wolfclyde, and Tom and Alison Cockburn, Kingside.

Suffolk rams topped trade at £5,000 a ram lmab from Robert Wilson of the Strathisla flock. This entry sold to Evans, Towergate.
