Prices peaked at £2,400 at the Western Holstein Club’s spring bull show and sale at Beeston Castle last Friday (24 April).
The Gould family from Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury, took the three top prices.
Sale leader at £2,400 was the champion Woodmarsh Zincio. This November 2013 born bull is sired by Bertaiola Mincio and is out of the Goldwyn daughter Woodmarsh Goldwyn Zandra, classified Ex91, who gave 14,636kgs at 5.69% protein and 3.3% fat in her last lactation. Successful bidder was Messrs Evans, Llanrhystud.
Following this at £2,350 was Woodmarsh Medora, from the same stable as the top priced lot. This 17-month-old is sired by Val-Bisson Doorman and is out of the Comestar daughter Woodmarsh Lauthority Melody 177th, who gave 12,518kgs in her first lactation at 4.23% protein and 2.9% butterfat. Buyer was Judith Reed, Wiston, Pembrokeshire.
Just shy of this at £2,200 was Woodmarsh Saloon, sired by the same bull as the previous lot and out of Woodmarsh Knowledge Sallie 28th, who gave 13,366kgs in her second lactation at 4.45% protein and 3.37% fat. He was purchased by Willis Dairy Farms, Cholmondeley.
Messrs Evans, Llanrhystud, also paid £1,900 for the 13-month-old Holmland Gladiator from P and NA Findley, Wrexham. Sired by De-Su Freddie Galaxy he is out of the Million daughter Farnear-Ur Million Annmarie, who gave 12,223kgs, 3.75% and 3.19% butterfat.
Aintree Admiral Red from Richard Pilkington, Shordley, made £1,700 when selling to M and EA Hales, Oulton, Cheshire. Sired by Damartini Attitude-Red he is out of the Talent daughter Cityview Talent Ashley, who have 10,926kgs in her fourth lactation at 3.80% protein and 3% butterfat.
Two calls of £1,600 were made. First of these was paid for Richard Pilkingtons’ homebred 13-month-old bull Aintree Northop. Buyer was RST and SA Morgan, Whitchurch.
At the same money was the September 2013-born Tregibby Munster from A Wilson, Cardigan. Buyer was DE Gaskin, Wrexham.
Averages: Nine Holstein bulls, £1,794.44
