Red Ruby Devons sell to £3,990 at Sedgemoor

The autumn show and sale of Red Ruby Devon cattle hit a high of £3,990 at Sedgemoor last Friday.


Hitting the headlines was the stock bull Stonegrove Match Maker VG86 from the Nowers herd dispersal on behalf of John and Sylvia Lindley, Wellington. Buyer was Sir David Wills, Bristol. Sired by Thorndale Fitzroy 3rd he is out of Stonegrove For-get-me-knot 2nd. This March 2011 born bull was joint young bull of the year in 2012 and won the reserve male championship at the Royal Cornwall show in 2012.

Next best at £3,150 was the breed champion Stonegrove Oscar from Worcester-based Stonegrove Livestock. Buyer was Deborah Telling, Lydeard St Lawrence, Taunton. Sired by Bollowal Elgar this April 2013-born bull is out of a homebred dam, who is a sister to the acclaimed Stonegrove High n Mighty.

Highest price female was the in-calf heifer Nowers Orange 6th. She was knocked down for £2,835 to breed newcomers Mark and Hayley Stoneham, Hatford, Oxfordshire, who are establishing the Beau herd. Sired by Knowstone Challenger she is out of a homebred dam by Bollowal Cantata.


Selling for £2,153 to Mark and Hayley Stoneham, Oxfordshire, was the female champion Bagnell Moonbeam from Caroline and Philip Gay, Chilworthy, Somerset. Born in January 2012 she is sired by Thorndale Assirati Ex92 and out of a Challenge Brigadier 3rd sired dam. She sold in calf to Bagnell Nelson.

Messrs Gay also bought the reserve female champion Bagnell Melody for £1,995, again from the Stoneham stable. Sired by Fitzroy 3rd she is also by a Challenge Brigadier dam and sold in calf to Bagnell Javelin – interbreed winner at Melplash in 2013.


Averages: six bulls, £2,184; 73 cows and calves, £1,020; 46 in-calf heifers, £982; 46 maiden heifers, £750.
