Riddings dairy dispersal hits 2,300gns

The dispersal of I and P Ellithorn’s Riddings herd hit a high of 2,300gns at Borderway Carlisle last week.

The Ellithorn family had wonderful support from a large crowd of buyers who were drawn to the productivity and longevity of the Ridding’s cattle.

A large percentage of the herd were summer calving animals and this reflected the values achieved on the day with buyers currently wanting fresh milk to boost this year’s fall in production.

There were a small number of freshly calved cows and heifers and they sold to average just over £1,700 with a top price of 2,300gns paid for Riddings Jordan Empress.  This youthful third calf cow was four weeks fresh giving 43kgs and was sired by Annandale Jordan. She now joins the herd of R Kellett and Sons, White House Farm, Hexham.

Among the other cows on offer, the overall top price on the day of 2,700gns went to a Dairy Shorthorn cow due with her third calf in March.  The cow had been purchased from the Marleycote herd owned by the Baynes family, she was sired by Llandovery Jinnys Empire and displayed all the style and class to be shown later in the year.

Averages: 16 Shorthorn Cows in calf/milk, £1431.50; 66 Cows in calf/milk (no calves), £1206.86; 54 Heifers in calf/milk (no calves), £1153.15; 24 Holstein In-Calf heifers, £1206.63; 57 Holstein maiden heifers, £639.03; 31 Holstein Heifer calves, £441.34; 13 Shorthorn Heifer calves, £416.77; 8 Holstein X Shorthorn maidens, £473.81; 3 Bulls, £1505.00 (Harrison and Hetherington)
