Ruthin show potential sale tops at 4,800gns

Limousins stole the show and took the day’s top prices at Ruthin show potential sale on the weekend, where bidding peaked at 4,800gns for the overall champion.

Overall 70 cattle sold to an overall average of £1,547.

Auctioneer Glyn Owens said a strong contingency of buyers from across the UK saw a nearly full clearance rate of 98%.

He added: “The quality of cattle was very good. We’ll definitely be seeing them again. 10-15 were good enough to win winter fairs and summers shows up and down the country.”

Last year the heifer champion Too Cool To Fool went on to win the RWAS championship after being purchased by Colin Brooks, Worcestershire at the sale from Dai Brute, Brecon, for £3,000.

Sale leader was the overall champion, a seven-month-old Limousin heifer from first-time exhibitors G and ML Roberts. Buyer was BE Williams, Sennybridge, Brecon.

2122015 Lot 57

Second best at £3,250 was a July 2014-born Limousin cross steer from well-known breeders JM and AM Lewis, Llanwrda, Carmarthem. He joined the show team of GR Fountaine, Beachhampton, Milton Keynes.

2122015 Lot 79

David John Lloyd and Co, Caersws, brought out an eight-strong team of calves. Their best was a July 2014 born Limousin x heifer which topped at £3,000 when selling to Phil and Sharon Sellers, Lincoln.

2122015 Lot 13

A trip from Carmarthenshire paid off for DG and E Lewis when they were rewarded with a day’s top price of  £2,800 for their seven-month-old Limousin steer. This one joined TC Edwards, Corwen.

2122015 Lot 46

Just shy of this at £2,750 was a June 2014 British Blue x heifer from WRB and P Jones, Kerry, Newtown. This one headed to Bristol with MD and KE Lanfear.

The reserve overall champion and champion steer, a nine-month-old Limousin from Bowen and Bowen, Welshpool, sold for the day’s fifth highest price of £2,700. This one was snapped up by Melanie and Michael Alford, Devon.

2122015 Lot 69

The Bowen family also took a call of £2,400 for their reserve champion steer, another nine-month-old Limousin. Buyer was R Miller, Money More, Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile the reserve champion heifer, a seven-month-old Limousin from JL nad DA Davies, Clifton Mill Farm, Rugby, made £2,350 when selling to A Roberts, Gaerwen.

In the unhaltered class a 13-month British Blue heifer was the pick of judge Glyn Howatson, Nantglyn. Exhibited by WG and RA Roberts, Groesffordd, Glan Conwy, she was purchased for £2,200 by MJ and JA Pidsley, Devon.

The reserve champion rosette in the unhaltered class went to EI Lewis and Son, Henllan, Machynlleth. This one was knocked down to T and B Boothroyd, Crown Farm, Hull for £1,300.

The final bid over £2,000 at £2,150 was paid by R Whitfield, Newbold, St Helens, for (Lot 27) a June 2014 born Limousin steer from JL and DA Davies, Clifton, Rugby.
