RW 2010: Parasite monitoring service launched

A new internal parasite monitoring service for beef and sheep farmers has been launched at the Royal Welsh Show today.

Graig Producers, a livestock marketing group from Powys, are offering a faecal egg counting system which combines a simple faecal sampling procedure and a freepost service. This allows the parasite burden to be monitored and treatment given before the worm burden becomes damaging.

It also avoids the expensive option of preventive treatment, said Graig Producer director Nigel Elgar. “Targeted use of wormers is essential if increased resistance is to be avoided. Our FEC service is simple and inexpensive and requires no trips to the vets. We hope it will be a major step forward in sustainable parasite control.”
