Salers hit 5000gns at Welshpool

Salers cattle sold to a top price of 5000gns at last week’s sale at Welshpool, after cattle left unsold through the ring were traded afterwards.

Topping the prices were a brace of 5000gns bids, the first of which came for Rigel Peregrine from the Pye family, Yorkshire. Peregrine is by imported sire Sagitaire and sold to Guto Jones, Blaenbowi, Capel Iwan.

Second top price was achieved again by the Pyes for another Sagitaire son, Rigel Carlton Poll. This black polled son was bought by commercial suckler producer Andrew Beavan, Llanfiar Waterdine for 3000gns.

The best sale through the ring came when Aled Jenkins, Capel Cynon, Llandysul, sold his 2007-born Coland Taliesin son Mock Arwyn at 2500gns. Out of Coland Rochelle, he stays in Wales, having sold to J Jones and Son, Llanidloes, Powys.

Among the females on offer the top call came for the female and overall champion from the pre-sale show Coland Queenie from Denis and Hilda Rogers, Haycastle, Haverfordwest. Selling for 2400gns, Queenie is by Novak and out of Coland Nerris and sold with her March born bull calf Coland Conner at foot to Fred Robinson, Church Stretton, Shropshire.

Best of the heifers on offer was another from the Pyes, Rigel Ina. This one is a Rigel Othello Poll daughter and sold in-calf at 2000gns to imported sire Casimir to Mike and Teresa Jones, Taliesin, Machynlleth.

In the commercial females on offer the best price came 1t £1700 for a four year old Salers cross cow with a Charolais calf at foot from Denis and Hilda Rogers.
