Second Springbird Holstein sale sets 4800gns top call

The second sale to disperse the Springbird herd for the Carr family saw the top price for both sales set at 4800gns.

This lead price was paid for Springbird Outside Present by Redgate Farming for their large dairy unit in Cambridgeshire. This super cow had won many prizes including reserve breed champion at last year’s South of England Show and completed a third lactation of over 17,700kg. Due again in July to Morningview Ashlar, she traces back to the 3 times Royal Champion Ullswater Present 9.

The same buyers paid the second top price of 3100gs for third calver Springbird Iron Wietske that gave over 12,700kg in her second lactation.

South Eastern buyer Mike Goddard was in for a number of the better lots to take back to his Guston herd at Dover, with his top purchase being another 14,000kg Outside daughter, Bixleypark Pulsatilla 9, due in June to Laudan, for 2600gs.

This sale saw the in calf and maiden heifer sections go under the hammer, with a top price of 2200gs paid by Glebewin herd owner Michael Smale, Launceston, for Springbird Moscow Vaakje, whose dam had been purchased for a high price at the 2006 Stardale Sale.

Other members of the Wietske family were in demand, making 2400 and 2300gns.

Averages; 160 cows and calved heifers £ 1560.30 (incl 62 calves @ £444.39), 111 served heifers £1323, 86 maiden heifers £ 879.55 (Norton and Brooksbank with Kivells).
