Sedgemoor dairy trade hits 2850gns
There were cattle in plenty to suit all systems at the annual Top 10% seasonality sale of Holsteins and Jerseys held at Sedgemoor Auction Centre in Somerset where bidding reached 2850gns.
The entry of 170 head included consignments of high-genetic, commercial and organic cows and heifers, but the day’s top price of 2850gns came for one of three bulls from the West Country’s leading Beneknowle herd.
Offered from P J Andrews’ herd at Plymouth, the February 2007-bred Beneknowle Midas is by Braedale Goldwyn and has a PIN ÂŁ+42 and PLI ÂŁ+185. He is a heifer’s calf from the VG86 Beneknowle Sinatra Meg 49 who traces back to the well known Ex95 Bartonhoo Perfection Meg.
Midas is from 10 generations of VG and Ex dams and heads for Bridgwater with R and J Jones.
Westwood Farms, Exford, Somerset consigned six heifers from their Panda herd and earned the top female price of 2700gns with the 17-month-old ET-bred heifer Panda Storm Andrea. From a strong dam line boasting some of the best Stelbro breeding, she is out of Stelbro Rebecca Andrea. Buyers were A J Bennett and Sons for their Lilylane herd in Somerset.
Messrs Bennett went on to sell the smart heifer Lilylane Vordon Lynnette at 2650gns. This freshly calved heifer had a PIN +ÂŁ123 and goes to an undisclosed buyer.
David Norman, Sherborne, Dorset once again impressed the ringside with some stylish heifers from his Ciderhouse herd and it was one by the home-bred sire Ciderhouse Franchesco that topped his offering. Out of a Sinatra dam and giving 34kg from an April calving, she is from eight generations of VG and Ex dams and made 2600gns. The six Ciderhouse heifers averaged ÂŁ2000.
The dispersal of F E Hill and Son’s Farmestate herd at Bridgwater found no shortage of buyers with the top price of 2000gns paid for Farmestate Paramount Snowstorm – a daughter of Rock Ella Paramount – offered with her June born heifer calf by Signature. The sharp demand for Jerseys included an 1800gns call to secure the third calver Wotton Decadence Analese (Greenslade Taylor Hunt).
