Sheep Farmer of the Year offers tips at open day

Rotational grazing and the benefits of having a strict culling policy are two key topics being tackled at an open day hosted by the current Farmers Weekly Sheep Farmer of the Year.

“How to ensure a profitable future in sheep production” is the theme of the event at Keith Williams’ unit at Hundred House, Llandrindod Wells, on Tuesday 9 September.

Mr Williams secured the award with his 800-ewe commercial flock with all progeny finished for Waitrose’s Welsh lamb scheme and he will share some tips on managing a successful flock.

Other speakers at the open day organised by RABDF Events and supported by Farming Connect, include Sue Buckingham of the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences, who will cover rotation grazing and how farmers go about taking this approach to grass management.

Independent grass consultant Charlie Morgan will cover nutrient management while Livestock Management System’s Marcus Bullock will focus on genetics and performance recorded sheep. Finally, KN Consulting’s Katherine Nakielny will outline the benefits of a strict culling policy.
