STIRLING BULL SALES 2015: Aberdeen Angus bulls sell to 20,000gns

Aberdeen-Angus bulls met a firm trade on Monday (19 October) at Stirling, selling to a top price of 20,000gns.

Overall 32 bulls sold from 44 offered, representing a clearance rate of 72% and they averaged £4544 – up £72 on last year for the same amount of bulls sold.

Commenting on the sale, chief executive Johnny Mackey said: “Given the current economic climate, trade was strong for bulls with both demand from pedigree and commercial producers.”

Sale leader was the pre-sale senior champion Haughton Levi P105 from Whittaker Farms, Spurstow. This Hallington Evo L333 son is out of the successful show cow Haughton Laura L026, herself a Rawburn Elysium F547 daughter. Levi was a class winner at the Summer National Show at Kelso and now heads to Northern Ireland for James Porter’s Old Glenort herd, Lisburn, Co Antrim.

Two bulls from father and son team Neil and Graeme Massie of Dinnet, Aberdeenshire, then shared a 7,000gns price. The first was their intermediate and reserve overall champion Blelack Everest P300. Born in April 2014, this Blelack Equity J127 son is out of an Oakchurch Dominator G035 daughter and was junior male champion at the Highland Show in June. He sold to the Carskiey Partnership, Campbeltown, Argyll.

At the same money was the junior and overall champion Blelack Bluey P348. This one was a son of Blelack Evergreat H003 and out of a Blelack Egotist K531 daughter. Successful bidder was David Walker for his Galcantray herd, Cawdor, Nairn.

The ringside was jam packed for the total herd sale of John Loftus’ Weeton herd from John Loftus.

Sale leader at 18,000gns was the May 2007-born Blelack Eyrie G197. Bred by the Massie family, this Nightingale Ernie B133 daughter was originally purchased at the Blelack sale in 2012 for the record price of 32,000gns. She’s out of the GV Duke 18C daughter Eyrie X23 of Blelack and sold with her Netherallan Peter Pershore E052 heifer calf at foot, Weeton Eyrie R471, to Donald Rankin for his Kilmaluag herd, Isle of Skye.

Next best at 15,000gns was her daughter Weeton Eyrie N376, a March 2013-born Peter Pershore daughter. This one was sold having been served to Retties Lone Ranger M174. Buyer was Richard and Carol Rettie, Clackmannanshire.

Setting a new bull calf record at 14,000gns was Weeton Diamond Mine P444, a December 2014-born Weeton Lord Heath M367, out of the GH Coverboy Eric 110R daughter Weeton Diamond Mist M351. This one sold with a milk figure of +15 and a Self Replacing Index of +49 to Hamish and Margaret Sclater for their Turriff, Aberdeenshire-based Deveron herd.

Just prior to that the partnership of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland-based Redhead and Watson, purchased the dam of Diamond Mine for 13,000gns as a foundation female for their new herd. This one sold having been AI’d to Rawburn Edge J983.

Meanwhile prices topped at 11,000gns in the collective offering of show females, with 10 lots selling for 5000gns or more.

Sale leader was Mosston Muir Ingrid L289 from Guthrie, Forfar-based Tom Rennie’s last offering in Stirling. Born June 2011, she’s by Mosston Muir Elgin J232 and is out of the KMK Alliance daughter Mosston Muir Inga H210. This one sold to Graham Willox, Old Meldrum, Aberdeenshire, having been AI’d to Netherallan Peter Pershore E052. Joining her was her January 2015-born heifer calf, Mosston Muir Ingrid R351, by Mosston Muir Mr Angus L288 for 7000gns.

The production sale from John Elliot’s Rawburn herd, Kelso, realised a top price of 10,000gns for Rawburn Ebony N666, a March 2013-born Oakchurch Field Marshall K143 daughter out of a home bred Hoff Limited Edition daughter. This one sold in calf and due January to Rawburn Boss Hogg N630 to John Walsh for his Buckhurst herd, Bury, Lancashire.

The single female forward from Whittaker Farms’ Haughton herd realised a top bid of 7,000gns from Andrew and Judith Denning, Somerset, for Haughton Justine Erica L012, a January 2011-born Chapelton Eventer E809 daughter. This one was a class winner at the Highland Show this year and was also reserve champion at the National Summer Show in Kelso.  Her January 2015-born Hallington Evo L333 daughter, Haughton Justine Erica R132, found a new home with Messsrs Hill and Wright, Doncaster, at 6,500gns.
