Stirling (Perth) Limousin bulls preview

With the first of the spring bulls sales at Stirling just 10 days away it was with a reassuring thump that the Limousin and Angus catalogues arrived on my desk this morning. Admittedly the Angus catalogue is a more weighty tome than the Lim one, but the Lims do have more than 300 bulls entered for Carlisle in three weeks time, so that’s no great suprise.

Now, on to the main business of this post, a preview of the Lims on offer next month at Stirling. Once again the dominance of the blacks of the breed at Scottish sales looks set to continue, with no fewer than 14 black bulls entered for the sale out of the 119 Limousins on offer.

First to catch my eye in the catalogue is also the first in the book, Millington Defender. This is a Neuf son out of French cow Superbe, a Mas Du Clo daughter and sells with a beef value of +40, with a full brother having made 9500gns previously.

Then a few lots later is Culnagechan Douglas from Derek Hume. This Cloughhead Umpire son is out of Kype Vicky, a Cloughhead Lord daughter. This one was interbreed performance bull champion at Balmoral last year and third in the all Ireland bull derby.

Another from Millington also catches the eye, being Millington Dolomite a full brother to Millington Tangerine, the great show cow of previous years. His figures are far from exceptional, but his sister was a tremendous cow in her day, so he has to worth taking a look at.

The first from Bruce Goldie is also worth noting, carrying a beef value of +35 and being a Goldies Terence son. He’s out of Goldies Ainsi, a Greenwell Major daughter.

And also of note on the EBV side of things is Ringway Digby, this son of Oxygene, grandsire of the great breeding bull Wilodge Vantastic, is out of a Cloughhead Rocket daughter and has a beef value of +36.

A beef value of +37 supports the first of Michael Massie’s to catch the eye, this is Elrick Dominator, a Croftlimousin Spencer son, out of a Ryedale Paragon daughter in the shape of Elrick Tango.

And another from Millington is noteworthy for being out of a maternal sister to Tangerine and by Cannon son Woodhouse Prince.

By far the most eyecatching so far in the book is the black bull Goldies Black Detroit from Bruce Goldie. This one is by Normande Arapaho and out of Goldies Veil, giving him the same sire and grand dam as October’s 12,000gns bull Goldies Black Denver which sold to Harry Emslie and the same grand dam as 25,000gns Bailea Black BMW. He has a beef value of a whopping +46.

Another with a beef value of more than +40 is Spittalton Domino from John Burnett. This Rocky son is ET bred out of Spittalton Roberta, a Gigolo granddaughter. He has a beef value of +42, but could his legs be an issue being a Rocky son? His full brother Spittalton Dunker has a beef value one point higher at +43, although his calving ease is -6.4.

A second black then draws the eye, this being from the renowned home of black Lims, the Adam family’s Newhouse herd. This is Newhouse Black Dominator, a Tamarvalley Boscastle son out of Newhouse Teak, a Greenwood Poll Homerun daughter. He comes with a beef value of +42.

Then comes another Goldies bull, Goldies Drummajor, this is a Terence son out of Goldies Tessa, a full sister to a twice French national champion cow. He has a beef value of +39.

The highest beef value in the catalogue is sported by another from Goldies, Normande Arapaho son Goldies Definition. This is a heifer’s calf out of Goldies Bonny, full sister to 20,000gns bull Goldies Apollo. His beef value is +49.

And then another black, this time Towthorpe Black Dolomite, a Greensons Ural son with a beef value of +39.

The final pick is another from the Goldies string and another Normande Arapho son, Goldies Director. This is out of Goldies Abigail, a Terence daughter out of Ronick Isabelle. He comes with a beef value of +42.

That’s pretty much it for my selection, and as always there’s sure to be something else you like the look of that I’ve missed out. So, feel free to add a comment and I look forward to seeing plenty of you ringside at Stirling. The Angus preview will come tomorrow……
