Strong attendance at Red Ruby dispersal

Thought to be the largest dispersal of Red Ruby Devon cattle with 356 head catalogued, Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt reported an attendance of well over 500 people. The Gittisham cattle dispersed at Hayne Farm, ended up travelling from Cornwall to Scotland with interest expressed from abroad.

And with over 60 livestock purchasers, the sale topped at 2000gns for the polled cow Gittisham Daisy 6th and her third heifer calf born in February. Daisy was by Whitefield Weatherman and out of Rockhead Daisy 75th, with her calf by Champson General. She was one of two lots purchased by Mr P R Smith to form the foundations of a new herd in Marlborough.

His second lot at 1900gns was another Rockhead and Whitefield Weatherman daughter, this time from the Buttercup family being the polled cow Gittisham buttercup 10th and her third calf, a March born heifer by General.


Autumn calving cows due to the North Devon bull sold to 1150gns for another Rockhead Buttercup daughter by Essington Bertie, she was due to her second. The in calf cow Gittisham Cowslip 2nd due to the Charolais for her 6th calf in November by Forde Abbey Uncle and out of Kerrs Cowslip 7th, also sold for 1150gns.


Served heifers that had been running with Cutcombe Duke since July sold to 1200gns for another Cowslip, this time by the homebred Gittisham Combe bull. Bulling heifers born spring 2007 were close behind at 1150gns for Gittisham Undine 12th by Gittisham Dandy and out of Webberton Undine. Yearling heifers sold to 900gns for a Frolic again by Dandy. Both younger heifers were purchased by Mr R B Payne, Cullompton.

The three stock bulls sold to 900gns twice for the 6 year old Cutcombe Duke and the 9 year old Essington Bertie. Devon stores sold to £555 for 25 month old steers.
