Strong demand for Swaledale gimmers

Demand for Swaledale gimmer lambs was better than expected at the breed association’s annual prize show and sale at Kirkby Stephen last weekend with 1483 entries averaging £25.36 – down £4 on the year.

Auctioneer Ted Ogden said the lifting of movement restrictions was a positive step that had given buyers some encouragement: “There’s not much cash about but at least some is starting to circulate. Prices were down but not as much as some anticipated.”

Judge John Nutter, Hurst Green, Clitheroe, Lancashire awarded the championship to lambs from David Birbeck, Stainmore. They made £65 apiece to John Reed and his daughter Valerie from Alston, Cumbria. (Harrison and Hetherington).
