Strong sheep trade at Kington sees hoggets sell to £97.50

An entry of 1452 hoggets, cull ewes and store hoggets saw a strong trade in all sections at Kington yesterday (Thursday 26 February).

Hoggets sold to £97.50 for a 56kg from Lew Davies; ewes to £137.50 for a Suffolk ewe from S Williams and Son; rams to £146.50 for a Suffolk from Lew Davies and small store hoggets to £65 from Lou Lloyd.

Hoggets averaged 193p/kg and cull ewes averaged £92.

Handy weight export hoggets were in short supply selling to £87 for 43kg from Glyn Jones. The majority of hoggets were in the 47-52kg and found a ready market at 180-190p/kg. A 52kg hogget from Peter Bufton made £93 and 51kg from Ken Rogers made £91.

The cull ewe trade was better than ever, reported auctineers with an average of £92 and many lots selling over £100 a head. Texels sold to £137.50, Suffolk x to £121, mules to £115.50 and Welsh to £70.
