Sussex equal breed record at Ashford

Sussex breeders saw the breed’s record price of 4600gns matched at last week’s autumn sale at Ashford.

Selling for this, the top price of the day was young bull Trottenden Formidable 5, an Elbridge Formidable 3 son from C E & W S Millson. Out of a Terpsichore cow he sold to Vanessa McDonald, Canterbury.

Next best was the reserve champion from the pre-sale show, stock bull Mayfield Major 9 from Jane Howard. He wasborn in 2006 and has been shown in recent years to be ‘Bull of the Year” three times. He was traded at 3600gns to P Watts, Mark Cross, Crowborough. Again polledbreeding came to the fore with Chandlerand Dunn offering Regent 3 of Goldstone which sold for 2600gns toThe Royal Farms, Windsor.

In the cows and calves the priced were led by J D Hickman who saw three sell to 1175gns for Lyles Bella 22. This 2006 born cow with heifer calf at foot sold to Sutton Estates, Newbury while asecond Lyles cow made 1000gns. J King and Son, Reigate saw their in calf cowMatts Statice, born in 2007 she took the top call from the in calf cows at 850gns to Vanessa McDonald.

Earl de la Warr’sin calf heifers were first in the ring and sold from 1100 to 1500gns to SuttonEstates (2), Vanessa McDonald (2) and the Royal Farms (1) while the Maylamssaw a heifer from their Peacocks herd make 1400gns to Mrs McDonald and five moremade over 1000gns. A D Kinnear offered sold nine heifers to average 897gns.

A large entry ofmaiden heifers very encouragingly sold to 20 different purchasers and a largepercentage will mature to breed. Les Stevens and Sons sold a Boxted Finchheifer for 1000gns to S Feilding for1000gns and will be part of the foundation stock for the revival of the Bredeherd of Sussexcattle. Polled lines offered by J D Hickman saw to heifers make 710 and 650gnsto F A Starley and Son, Henfield; E H Holdstock and Sons two made 760gns each to Vanessa McDonald and R H V Moorhead’s Lilly Vale herds regular offering of six made to 570gnsaveraging 508.

As a footnote acopy of the first ever herdbook for the breed made £1000, and old 3 show medals£200.
