Swaledale shearling trade eases

Who knows what dizzy heights the shearling trade might reach over the next two days at the Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association’s three-day premier fixture at Kirkby Stephen but yesterday saw aged rams ease a bit on last year levelling at £706 – that’s back £26.

Ram lambs fared a littler better and were up £88 to average £388. Top call was £3,600 for a ram lamb from B E Hall, Bridge End that stood champion. K and E Bland, Cotegill led the aged rams taking the top ticket and making £3600. So what does the trade tell us about what’s to come? Perhaps there’s plenty of cash about from those Mule lambs to encourage ram buyers to dig deeper than ever with more prepared to take a serious punt with a big spend on shearlings. Looks like it could be a very interesting couple of days in east Cumbria.
